Lecture by Dr. art. Ieva Tihovska “History of Roma Activism in Latvia: The Work of Jānis Leimanis”



On September 22, at 6 pm in the Riga Jewish Community House, Skolas Street 6, lecture by Dr. art. Ieva Tihovska “History of Roma Activism in Latvia: The Work of Jānis Leimanis” will be held, which will introduce the activity of the main Latvian Roma activist of the first half of the 20th century Jānis Leimanis (1886–1950) in the context of the ethnic mobilization of the Roma in Europe.


Leimanis’ efforts were multifaceted and covered the fields of culture, religion, Roma lifestyle and employment. His persistent efforts to "enlighten" his people caused enthusiastic, but also skeptical and critical attitude. Following the archive of documents and publications in periodicals, the lecture will formulate Leimanis' model of activism and the challenges of its implementation.


Dr. art. Ieva Tihovska is a researcher at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Art of the University of Latvia, as well as an assistant professor at the Department of Musicology of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music.

She developed a doctoral dissertation on Roma music culture in Latvia.
